About Dr. Crystal Ruff

Crystal Ruff

Dr. Crystal Ruff is a keen young investigator in the field of regenerative neuroscience and translational research, with a proven track record of academic and performance excellence. After graduating Summa Cum Laude (Top 1%) with an Honours BSc in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from McMaster University, she completed her PhD in Neuroscience at University College London (UCL), with the Director of Perinatal Brain Repair, investigating transcriptional regulation of axonal regeneration. Her graduate studies were completed under full-scholarship; she earned UCL’s Graduate Research Studentship and also the Overseas Research Studentship from the UK Secretary of State for Education and Science.

Dr. Ruff recently returned to Canada to commence a post-doctoral fellowship, spearheading the stem cell therapy for Cerebral Palsy animal initiative in association with the NeuroDevNet NCE. While at UHN, she earned the Freedman Postdoctoral Fellowship, as well as several research-based awards such as a McMurrich Award, first place poster presentation at the national CP: Cell to Person Conference as well as first place Postdoctoral Oral Presentation at the TWRI Trainee Research Symposium.  She was also awarded several travel awards and was an invited speaker at international conferences such as the Annual NeuroDevNet Brain Development Conference and the National Neurotrauma Society’s annual symposium.

Her numerous and substantial scholastic and community awards reveal her intrinsic drive to excel and results-oriented approach to problem solving and project management.  As a new postdoctoral fellow, she is interested in the potential for stem cells – particularly patient-specific iPSCs – to functionally remyelinate in the injured or dysmyelinated brain.
